CURATED: Introduce yourself!
CAMILA CORNELSEN: I am a photographer, cinematographer, GIF maker, DJ, musician… I’m doing a lot of things at the same time.
C: How did you get started creating the work we see on your Instagram?
CC: I’ve been photographing since 2001 and more professionally since 2005. Cinematography came into my life only in 2012, but I was already thinking about video formats a little while before. I believe when Instagram added the possibility to upload videos on the grid a lot changed for me. The 3D GIFs I was already doing for a while suddenly got a new place to be posted.
C: How has technology inspired you?
CC: I thought I was more an analog kind of person. I love my old cameras and film processing. And, then in the end of 2016 I got an iPhone 7 plus (I had an iPhone 5 for 4 years). I started trying the new camera features while I was on my sets and I was amazed by the results. So, I started filming and photographing and posting on IG Stories. From that point on I got addicted in discovering new apps and getting better on my storytelling.
C: What kind of community are you speaking to through your work?
CC: I’m not really into posting personal stuff or things about me. If it’s about me it’s subtle. So, my narratives on IG Stories are super visual and I believe that the people who follow my work are always in search of that.
C: What do you need to do your best work?
CC: A cup of tea.
C: When do you know a piece of work is finished?
CC: I believe in first ideas; they’re always very genuine and they have not been polluted by other things. So, when I get the concrete result of this first idea I’m satisfied with the job. When the work requires collaborating with other people this time is a little stretched because, of course, new ideas are added.
C: What’s a project you are most excited about right now?
CC: I’ve always liked to mix medias: analog with digital photo, performance with video projection, and music. There was a project I wanted to do a long time ago, but it involved neon lights. Then I thought about it, and I would have needed to spend some money I didn’t have. Now I have someone to collab with me and this idea might come off of the paper.
C: How do you challenge yourself to get better at your craft?
CC: Always to try to step up the previous work, do a little more, try something else, cross boundaries that I hadn’t before.
C: Who is on the top of your playlist right now?
CC: I love my “Discovery Weekly” playlist from Spotify — they really get me! But, some artists like Syd, ABRA, Jorja Smith have been there for weeks now… and always the goddess Sade.
C: What inspires you?
CC: I believe my ideas come from a lot of situations: blank spaces, crowded and messy environments, repetition, routine, break of the routine, silence, and good music.
C: Who are your favorite follows right now?
C: If you had more time, what would you be doing?
CC: Studying languages and piano.
