Medium Pulls the Plug on Referral Program
My mixed reactions to it
What’s the first thing to hit your inbox whenever Medium shakes things up?
You guessed it — a notification email. And this morning, I woke up to one, signaling yet another change was on the way.
You might think this notification sent shockwaves down my spine. But I’m neither shocked nor alarmed, knowing we can expect anything from Medium these days.
So, what’s the notification I’m referring to?
Medium has decided to pull the plug on its referral program.
Here’s what they said in their statement:
In July 2023, we announced that we were deprecating the membership referral program, and no new referred membership could be created as of September 1, 2023.
Today, we’re notifying you of another change: Starting May 1st, we will be ending all referral payments. This means April 2025 is the last month you will be able to receive earnings for them. You can see your referred member earnings in your Partner Program dashboard.
When I first heard it, the only thought running through my mind was — will it really make a difference to me? Will it affect my earnings on a large scale?
