CHAPTER: CONTEXT AND BUILDING

MACAWACA : Library and Commercial
by Ananda Putri Wardani | 08111940000097

Presenting The Identity Of A Public Space Or Building Configuration In A Continuous Context Of Time

Urbanization will have a positive impact, one of which is in terms of the economy, but the negative impact that will also be caused is on human resources and living standards, which will continue to be affected and will gradually decline. In addition, the imbalance in terms of development will make a city more chaotic and imbalanced in many ways. where this will become a phenomenon that will continue to rotate. The current architecture’s context is attempting to answer problems related to events that occurred at the time or are currently occurring in order for the solutions that will be presented to the architecture to be appropriate and effective. The role of context in today’s architecture has implications that architecture can be present by paying attention to combining external and internal elements so as to give meaning to the surrounding environment as a single spatial unit. The context that is formed can come from events, phenomena, or things that you want to criticize.

Architecture and urbanization are things that are difficult to separate in cities. The context appears to be complex from social, economic, building, technology, and so on. Apart from that, in responding to the phenomenon of urbanization, the context that will emerge is one of sustainability, seeing that there is already an imbalance between the number of urban residents and the resources provided in the city. As a result, in today’s modern architecture, the building has a building type configuration rather than a building with a unique feature. In addition, with a typical city grid, there is minimal difference between the appearance of each city and a minimum sense of place for the people in that city.

The concept of this design refers to two main issues related to urbanization and the configuration of buildings in cities, so that it is possible that in the future cities will be increasingly heterogeneous with building needs that tend to have multiple functions (multiuse). so that buildings in cities can strengthen the identity of public spaces or configurations of buildings and their influence on the space within them, which will exist in a continuous context of time. The development of the concept is based on design principles derived from theory and precedent, specifically the figure/ground relationship to see the relationship between built and unbuilt spaces to see the connection between the mass of the building and open space and social transformation. Based on the design principles and concepts, it was finally decided that the building object would be a library and a commercial building which would be divided into 3 masses arranged according to the hierarchy of public, commercial and library activities. The arrangement of building masses also provides access to interactive public spaces such as a parking building and an amphitheatre that can be utilized for public activities.

Surabaya Senior Community Center and Library: Public Space for Liveable Community
by Mercyella Prasetya | 08111940000004

The Surabaya Senior Community Center and Library is the result of an architectural design that responds to issues related to the urban aging population through efforts to increase the productivity of the elderly community. The theory that supports the issues in the design process is The Death and The Life of Great American Cities by Jane Jacobs which discusses how a city is formed with the contribution of a living community, including the elderly community which is often seen as a marginal community in society. The design object has a functioning public building specifically as a public library and family & elderly service center.

Through the design of public library facilities and family & elderly service centers, visitors are not only accommodated in the process of exploring certain informations digitally or in writing, but also visitors, especially the elderly community as a marginal group are invited to increase productivity and independence in the context of carrying out certain activities actively together with family and community and with a relatively low level of dependency as an effort to maintain and improve health both physically, cognitively, and psychologically. This is in line with the mission of the City of Surabaya to become an aged friendly city. The design object for the Surabaya Senior Community Center and Library is located on Jl. South Kalisari No 1, Kalisari, Mulyorejo District, Surabaya City, East Java on an area of 9504 m2. The total building area is 5700 m2. The design method applies a concept based framework.

NEUTRALGROUND 2022
by Khalista Destyana Anandyasputri | 08111940000043

What if this theory exists in a way that further widen the berth of bridge between every context? The context which would be applied to this theory is narrative in which what if the scenario for this context doesn’t support any integration between the two, rather that assimilated their differences. Therefore, the choosing of Saltivka on Ukraine was born, it was one the most war heavily sustained area when it was also one of Ukraine civil residential area resides. But rather than ran away from their home, many locals were holding their ground against the Russian and therefore creating this unsafe place for Elderly, Women and Children place for people were rushing towards the metro for communal protection and food supply.

The condition on this warzone could hypothetically build a scenario in which a safe haven was needed, not only for the Ukraine’s but also the Russians, but this premise brings a lot of additional discourse into the state of the building it’s going to present. Will it be fair? So how does a building act as a judge between the two, if the main issue of this case is What if this building act not only as a safe haven for one side, but also the other? What if this building offers the same qualities both for each part of it? What if we take the parti to build a wider gap contextual building? But yet a more inclusive and safer one, a place where everyone could connect with one another without the heavy barrier of War context?

Architecture as a Playful Way to Reduce Stress
by Tarisa Fandra Maizana | 08111940000099

Have you ever felt bored, or tired, as if you didn’t want to do anything, just lay down thinking about what future you will be going through? Phenomena like this of course often occur among students, especially final-semester students who are fighting for their final assignment. What’s more, coupled with an unsupportive environment, it adds a heavy burden to them. Then, how does architecture solve these problems? It is not impossible that in the future the feeling of boredom when learning experienced by students will be replaced by an increased sense of enthusiasm and if we relate it in the future, architecture can be used as a fun way to reduce boredom and stress and create a pleasant place to learn. Through the theory put forward by Tom Schumacher regarding contextualism, the context in the ITS environment is used where the design concept is based on the shape of the floor plan of the ITS area to then be distorted and adapted to solutions from land site analysis. So a building was formed that functioned as a five-story library.

Samarang N.I.S Reborn
by Fatihalhusna Lina Rahmawati | 08111940000051

Being Reborn Again

re·born /rēˈbôrn/

adjective

brought back to life or activity.

Because some memories are better to get recalled again.

The threat of global climate change is something that must be taken seriously. One result of this climate change is rising sea levels from time to time. As a city located on the north coast of Java Island, tidal flooding is something that (unfortunately) is common in Semarang City. This city is just one of the thousands of cities that may be threatened by global climate change.

Being vulnerable to climate change has so many disadvantages. You have to race with time to find a solution for your nearly ‘sunken’ cities, some places are gone because they get swept by water, and at some places, you must face tidal floods on a daily basis. This is not something that I am proud of, but over time-we has no other choice but to face the reality.

This is the reality, or maybe the next few years ahead. But we still don’t know.

One thing we know, if a specific place is gone, it means you must likely also lose the memories and history inside of it.

As one of the important cities in the history of Indonesian railways, several important places in Semarang were lost due to tidal floods. One of them is the Samarang N.I.S station, which was the first station in Indonesia, but this station has disappeared due to age and soil which has been lost due to flooding. And Samarang N.I.S; Reborn has the hope of returning lost memories and speculating what will happen if in the future there is no more solid ground to step on.

Social Laboratory: Community Center
by Imarotus Saadah | 08111940000028

WHAT IF?? cities in the future are crowded with humans but the land is getting narrower, and humans lose places to interact with each other after work. humans have lost public space for social interaction and relaxing on weekends with friends

The strategy that combines “city in the garden” and “traditional city” has been considered human needs in the 2000s. With these two strategies, it is realistic to build a modern city. Contextualism in this theory has solved the dilemma and deserves a major expansion in the future. Urban progress has made >50% of the population move to cities to guarantee a more decent life. People put their well-being in the development of the city, which creates more and more constant challenges. What can be seen immediately is that the density of the capital city of Jakarta and various other metropolitan cities is inversely proportional to the various islands and regions which still have the characteristics of friendly social and cultural social activities that grow and develop on the basis of Indonesian society.

The Social Laboratory is a new existence that will exist, is a link for social activities which is the basis of humans in living and socializing. In the year that will be predicted social activities will become very rare and desirable by various people who are tired of urban life with its individualism. Together they provide a place to be nostalgic for the present.

This design is located in the middle of Trenggalek City with local wisdom and culture that is still authentic. By using context & building theory from Tom Schumacher which combines the principles of City in the Park & Traditional City, a building is designed that accommodates the density of the city in the future. The mass of the 2-storey building facilitates social interaction that occurs between the interior and exterior spaces. The community center functions to facilitate user needs (refreshing and healing).

Humans in the future, with their growing metaverse activities, and cities that are increasingly crowded and lose land, can maximize social laboratories like living in villages with various facilities that are packed according to urban needs. Entertainment and urban parks are considered in this social laboratory.

Middle Ground
by Anisa Nurul Lathifa | 08111940000049

Theory of contextualism by Schumacher is about how figure & ground; the solid & the void are intimately connected and how the building keeps a concept, a strong idea, distorted by the conditions and pressures of the site without losing their personality. This theory raises speculation about what if in 1 architecture there are 2 different, contrast, and contradictive contexts? And what if this theory of contextualism is applied on an architecture that stands on a border between north and south korea with all the context there. With various existing contexts, military, political, ecological, and others.

The problem that arises is that the two countries, South and North Korea cannot be brought together in the same building or place. Then the designer creates an architecture with 2 buildings that are connected, in dialogue, and depend on each other. The typologies that emerged were fields and granaries in the north and cyanobacteria cultivation laboratories in the south. The design with 2 typologies that are reciprocal also aims to help raise the crops fertility in the north where food insecurity often occurs.

Suromenggolo Mall
by Eza Garnish Pramesti | 08111940000006

“In short, I shall be writing about how cities work in real life, because this is the only way to learn what principles of planning and what practices in rebuilding can promote social and economic vitality in cities, and what practices and principles will deaden these attributes.”

– J. Jacobs

From the theory put forward above, is it possible to start with simple things in completing something? For example, when you want to increase the vitality of a city, you need to see first how the city can work. These aspects of the city should support each other and work together. This can also be reviewed by looking at how people carry out their activities and utilize space in the city.

Social and economic issues, especially after the pandemic, what will make it rise again? Architecture serves as a means of interaction. Especially in this era, after the rise of people’s lives from the pandemic, there is a need for follow-up and adaptation of their socio-economic life. Not only through cyberspace, but can return to face-to-face interaction. Architecture can exist as a container that interacts from the space it provides.

What if the complexity of life in the city is resolved through the existence of interaction spaces?

With interaction, will social life revive? It might not jump right away, but it could go slowly. With architectural features, a container for interaction, can it help convey the experiences and needs of interactions between people? Can this interaction solve the concerns and problems that are happening? Maybe yes. Success or not, let the natural process run in such a way by itself.

Suromenggolo Mall is a public-mall located on Ponorogo Regency. The mall was chosen to be one of the architectural spaces that is able to present great potential for interaction from various groups in this region. The mall is supported by facilities such as communal space both inside and outside the building. This space can be used to interact with fellow Mall visitors and maybe it can increase community interaction and their productivity.

Manimals: The Place Where Humans and Animals Live Together
by Izzah Desta Bastian Ramadhani | 08111940000011

Using the mixed-use function theory by Jane Jacobs as the starting point, the main issue to be responded to is how interactions between users in a building. Carrying the speculation ‘What if, people and animals coexist once again?’, an apartment located in Kya-Kya Surabaya tries to answer this speculation.

With 2 very different groups of users, this building is designed to prioritize security aspects while still being able to accommodate interactions between these users. There will be a building called ‘Mini Zoo’. In this ‘space’, humans and animals can freely interact with each other and answer the speculations that have been carried out before.

U-Farm
by Meliana Sanjulia Miryati | 08111940000003

“If we relate to the urban pressures recognized in the statements given examples to the concept of idealization through programmatic requirements, we can arrive at a logically balanced contextual building.” -Schumacher

Tom Schumacher tries to solve problems through context. Urbanism and climate change have many impacts on the surrounding environment, especially the quality of the environment where humans live. The increased demand causes space to become narrower and land for organic food production to decrease. This has put pressure on food security in the world due to several factors, especially those related to air, reduced plant nutrition, decreased quality of support for crop production, and extreme changes in temperature.

What happens in the future when the land runs out for urbanism?

How can environmental quality be improved through the built environment as a production area?

U-Farm is a building designed to serve needs vertical farming dense urban city. There are three activities that can be done in doing vertical farming, including aquaponics, aeroponics, and hydroponics. Aside from being a vertical farming area, buildings and landscapes serves to accommodate public activities, especially in gatherings. As a green area in the middle of an urban city, it is hoped that U-Farm can be at the same time produce new ecosystems to improve environmental quality.

PERSONA Co-Working Space: Workspaces for Various Personas
by Nurma Fathia Alisyah | 08111940000083

Every individual, in a community or society, has a high level of social diversity and routine life. The existence of this diversity, does not shift the human need for interaction. More and more people are required to use various online platforms to conduct various social interactions and even do work. Most of the workforce even do their jobs by adapting to dispersed working conditions. Not only that, many educational institutions also continue learning online. The space for interaction is now mostly online, which has also made it easier to access the outside world to catch up with family, friends, and coworkers.

In the future, the new generation will bring a new set of skills to the workplace. All communication and collaboration activities will be remote (such as work from home) and more flexible. The speculation that can be present in this discussion, namely that the interactions that arise in the new generation will be more digital anywhere and anytime and are speculated to continue to grow in the future. Therefore, it is necessary to design a space that can accommodate nomad work activities and pay attention to the surrounding context.

An architectural design that can accommodate the design problem and allows it to be developed, namely in the form of a co-working space. In the design process, a conceptual framework is used to explore speculative ideas that develop from theoretical understanding. The architectural theory used as the basis for the selection of issues is based on the theory of context and building by Tom Schumacher. Based on this theory, contextualism supported by Schumacher focuses on the relationship between buildings and their environment, and suggests that contextualism can help improve and or build cities based on the needs of users and the relevance of the layout and construction of buildings to a context of location, time, or users themselves. With the method, design criteria are obtained that can build interaction by paying attention to the context of the surrounding environment (layout, social factors), accommodate activities for the nomadic worker community, apply social aspects around into an architectural element, and apply the concept of comfort in accordance with digital nomad activities. To adapt to the culture of dynamic workers, a coworking space is usually designed with concepts that can create enthusiasm at work, such as a well-lit work area, a work area that can be used simultaneously, a strategic location that can be reached by crowds, stable internet access, and an inspiring design.
