Clinic of Scent

by Wayan Lingga Hutama Putra

As time goes by, the corona virus patients are increasing and on the other hand the availability of places to treat corona patients is decreasing. Every corona patient who is sick has several levels, however, when being treated, the corona patient is faced with the same atmosphere of the room, stiff, closed between fellow patients. So the more patients there are, the stronger the atmosphere will be due to the more boundaries between patients and this can have a bad psychological effect on the patients. In addition, this is coupled with the polluting sound that always comes from various equipment which further aggravates the psychological condition of the community. If it is speculated, in 2025, the ward for corona patients will be full, room dividers will also be added, and the psychological condition of Corona patients in the city of Mataram will be increasingly disturbed. In fact, according to WHO data, 80% of corona patients do not need special treatment because they will heal on their own. The most important thing is the anti-body from the patient, so we need a healthy lifestyle and vitamins. To improve the psychological condition of the patient and increase the antibodies, the boundaries between these patients need to be removed so that the interaction can run well and to increase the interaction and psychological use of the scent element. However, what needs to be considered again is the privacy of each patient. Without privacy, the patient’s sense of insecurity will arise due to the many interactions with other people and other factors, both environmental and individual. To create privacy, the scent was then designed as a boundary for everyone, so the Vortex Ring principle was used. With this principle, the scent can then be fired into a space. This principle is then applied to floor elements with dimensional settings in accordance with the Proxemic approach. This floor can also be converted into a sleeping house for patients who suddenly experience critical conditions and accommodate corona patients, which if it will increase over time. The typology chosen was a clinical typology specifically treating corona patients which was then combined with a food court which in addition to being able to support health through food and drink also responded to the economic conditions of Mataram City which was affected during the pandemic. Some activities can also be carried out by patients while they are in this building such as exercising, playing, and others very freely because in principle, this building changes the perception of everyone who thinks the corona virus is a disaster into a “ticket” to feel life before the pandemic. This building is designed to be very flexible, besides being able to overcome the current pandemic problems, it is also able to adapt to respond to problems that will occur in the future. The wall that is created in the building is only a partition wall, because the limit in this building is the scent element.

The Food Retail Area: Architecture of Light

by Berliana Putri Nauli Harahap

In 2025, if the pandemic is still ongoing and a vaccine has not been found, people should get used to interacting with new habits and implementing the existing health protocols. In its implementation, the government creates physical barriers to visualize boundaries. However, the lack of discipline in Indonesian society makes these boundaries often violated, especially in urban areas with high population density, especially the food retail area. It is because the food retail area can accommodate human interaction for a long period of time so that barriers are needed. From these problems, light in architecture if previously used as lighting, what if the light in architecture is used as a barrier in the food retail area to maintain distance between humans. The purpose of the design is a food retail area for the public who implement the protocol of keeping distance between humans with the use of light as a barrier during pandemics in densely populated urban areas and high mobility. Generally, concept-based framework is used as a design method while the method used specifically is diagramming. Light in architecture is used as a design approach. Thus the information collected is related to light and barriers in architecture, food retail area, and building architecture. The experimental process is carried out by adopting the concept of heliostat which is reflecting, where the building site is used to reflect light into the hole in the building that is passed by the mirror on the building to reflect light on the prepared area.
