Presentation Skills

While looking for other bloggers trying to accomplish the same skill I came across Caya. Caya is an entrepreneur who created Slidebean to help people with their presentation skills. He was also invited to speak at a Ted Talk. I’ll be discussing his recent article about how you can stand out from the millions of presentations created. I’ll insert my own opinions with his ideas and discuss Caya’s fears before presenting at the Ted Talk.

Caya breaks out a presentation into 4 steps.

Caya (2014, December 5). How to make a presentation that stands out?

1. Tell the Story — why are you presenting what led you here

2. Empathy — resonate with your audience it is now or never

3. Turning Point — be dynamic, start with the facts then move toward your vision

4. Climax — just like in movies you need to introduce a fact you have been withholding for example, the price. This is the last thing you want people to know to really drive home your point.

Caya then details what the physical slide deck should illustrate.

“Presdocs are a non-ideal way to send information, they are neither documents nor presentations, and don’t fulfil either task very well” — (Caya, 2014)

In other words, you should present your material as a document when you need your audience to physically read and hold the details to remember. If you are trying to tell a story through pictures and short phrases a presentation is the right way. Don’t make a slide deck with detailed facts or calculations because the you are not fulfilling your purpose of what a presentation should be.

Caya also states quotes make for a more relatable and credible experience. I find this to be true, it creates another avenue or point of view for the audience to interpret. He also states to stick to one color and one font, don’t distract your audience switching the template and be concise. Lastly, he said no thank you slide. It is implied that you are thankful and if not it will take two seconds to say.

A few fears the author had when going to the Ted Talk to present are listed below:

Practice, practice, practice, and then practice some more. If you can in the same setting you will be presenting.

Keep it real, tell the story who originally had planned and you should blank-out for a moment.

Captivate the audience with your passion, this will keep them engaged and prevent you from worrying about not having their attention.
