Sheila Duncan was diagnosed with asthma around the age of 12. After living with asthma for decades, she learned of a man by the name of Tom Tam who was healing people of some of life’s most serious diseases. She decided to see how he could help her asthma. A few months after attending his classes, her Western medical doctor took her off her asthma medication, and she has not needed it since.

Here is a bit of her story.

Tell me about the journey to meeting Tom Tam.

I was diagnosed with asthma when I was a kid. Then I was a teenager who smoked, which did not help. I would have asthma attacks so severe that I would have to go the hospital for a few days and be hooked up to an IV. Interestingly, when I started to smoke, my asthma was not cured, but it was more masked. When I quit smoking 20 years later, my asthma really reared its ugly head. I was taking a steroid inhaler every morning — I really couldn’t function without it — and often was prescribed prednisone to get me through a tough asthma attack.

I was introduced to Tom Tam last year. He is an amazing man. I saw him for both his energy-healing class and for acupuncture. He has helped me with my asthma to the point where I do not take any of my asthma medications at all. I don’t remember the last time I have been to the hospital. He has been an amazing find for me. He can’t cure everybody, but has a great track record. Tom Tam has been a huge help to many people, and he has been a huge help to me.

I would go to him on a Thursday and get acupuncture and attend a healing class. Then I would go to one of his energy-healing classes on Sunday. I had acupuncture once a week. Now I have acupuncture once every five weeks. I spent the first few months going every Sunday to his energy-healing class, and now I have been only going to his energy class every five weeks, or once a month.

If I went to a new doctor, I would say that I have had a history of asthma, but if asked if I was asthmatic, I would say no. Previously, I would have to leave dinner parties because I would have an asthmatic attack. I was that sensitive. I am so grateful to Tom Tam.

Could you explain the energy-healing classes?

The very first class I went to was at the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston. I had no idea what to expect. There were about 100 people in the room. He goes around the room and asks people how they are doing. He knows a lot of these people because he has been working with them for so long. He asks how recent medical tests went. Many of these people have very serious diseases. When he asked me, I told him I had asthma.

Then Tom Tam and about 10 other people are in the front of the room, banging this little acupuncture doll each of them have with a silver hammer. He bangs the doll on the point that corresponds with the one you mentioned as being problematic. For example, let’s say a patient had asthma — he would call out the coordinating number for a lung point, and then everyone in the room with a doll will bang on that particular point with their silver hammer.

What he is doing is taking universal energy and directing it to whatever unique problem individuals in the room have. I know that sounds strange, but all I can tell you is it works. You can see people when he is working on them. You can see their faces get red from the energy. I did not feel that, but I definitely felt something. Banging on these dolls is his way of directing whatever you want to say — energy, divine healing — to a certain point, and that is all it is.

How long does he do this for each person?

Not long. Maybe 30 or 45 seconds. For example, the woman in front of me, who was kind of cranky, said she had shoulder surgery and could only lift her arm five inches. So he calls out a coordinating shoulder point and everyone starts banging on this doll in this particular point for about 45 seconds. When he was done he asked her to lift her arm. She could lift her arm 10 inches. She said, “I still cannot lift my arm above my head.” And he said, “You can lift it twice as far as you could before.”

I was amazed at that, and there were all sorts of stories like that all around the room. He does not charge for these classes. He asks for a donation. People put maybe $10 in a box. It is not about the money to him.

He helped cure a woman who had a vision problem. She was a doctor. She quit everything and went to work for him.

Did you feel anything when he had the class hit a point on the doll for you?

At the first class I went to, I felt something. Since then I have not felt a lot, maybe a little tingle, but I do not feel a lot. But I can take a deep breath now, that is for sure.

After the class, how do you feel an hour or two later?

I don’t feel any different, and that is the amazing thing — but the difference is, I don’t take any asthma medication or any medication anymore. For the first time in my life, I don’t take medication.

Was it immediately after that first class that you stopped taking the medication?

It was a couple of months into going to these energy-healing classes and getting acupuncture that I went to my primary-care doctor, who is an osteopath. I told him that I’d cut down taking my inhaler from two puffs in the morning to one puff in the morning to every other day. He said to me, “Why don’t you try to go without it now?” He said my blood tests were good.

My asthma doctor would tell me, “No matter what you do, do not stop taking your medicine.” So I was afraid not to take it. The osteopath told me that I had weaned myself down, so I stopped taking it right that minute and I never went back.

How long ago was that?

About a year now.

What recommendations do you have for adults with chronic asthma or for parents with children who have asthma?

The problem with Tom Tam is he is local to the Boston area. I would tell someone to call his office and see if he can recommend someone in their local area. He also has a television station where you can watch his classes and receive energy as well. I have learned about so many of the side effects of this asthma medicine I was taking. It affects your bones. I have a dry mouth still from this medication. I would really recommend that parents look into Eastern medicine for their kids.

Did you change your diet at all to help heal your asthma?

No. I did not change it all.

Is this treatment special to Tom Tam or is this an Eastern medicine practice?

This is something he has developed. He is originally from China. He has just been phenomenal. He gives people who are really ill comfort and support. There are medical doctors that go to this. Every time I go, there is a medical doctor with cancer sitting in the front row — that ought to tell you something.

Does he address every person in the room in these energy healing classes?

Yes. But very rarely does someone talk about asthma, because the problems he handles are so much bigger than asthma.

What is the difference between these energy-healing classes and the actual personalized acupuncture sessions received?

I think they are similar. I did energy healing and the acupuncture as a double-prong approach to heal my asthma. If I had to choose between the two, I would go to the energy-healing classes. You do have to pay for the acupuncture, and the energy classes are by donation.

Do you say that because the energy work is less expensive, or because you believe it to be more beneficial?

I believe the energy-healing classes have a little bit stronger of an impact. I am learning more about energy as I get older, and I will tell you: there is a lot out there.

He whips through them. You have to sit there while he talks to everyone. The classes are about an hour and a half long. He talks to everyone. He has a class at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston. He has presented to Brown University. He presented to a 100 or so doctors and nurses at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is definitely out-of-the-box, but I can tell you he is absolutely amazing.

Have you talked to any other Western doctors about Tom Tam’s treatment?

No, but I will tell you that I had a dear friend who passed away from a cancer no one has ever seen. He went to one of the top doctors at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, and this doctor said that they refer patients to Tom Tam. I think Tom Tam and Western doctors can work hand in hand. There are things that Western doctors can do that Tom Tam can’t, but I tell you what — if I was diagnosed with cancer, I would go to Tom Tam first.
