SILVER SPRING, Md. (February 2nd, 2017) — CuriosityStream, the world’s first ad-free on-demand documentary and nonfiction streaming service, kicked off its Black History Month programming today with Ebony: The Last Years of the Atlantic Slave Trade, a powerful and heartbreaking story told through the first-person accounts of slaves, ship owners, traders and colonists recounting the struggle to end the Atlantic slave trade.

The incredibly moving and superbly produced 60-minute film draws on the logbooks, letters and diaries of the victims and witnesses to one of history’s most brutal eras, depicted through dramatic recreations, bolstered by authentic drawings and period documents. Produced by the French company Les Films D’Ici, Ebony is directed by renowned Senegalese feature filmmaker Moussa Toure’ and features insight from historical experts around the world.

“We have all learned about the brutality and injustice of slavery through history books, but witnessing it through this stunning portrayal transforms it with shocking authenticity,” said CuriosityStream’s Chief of Programming Steve Burns. “Ebony is a landmark film that covers not only the human tragedy, but also the complicated economic and political perspectives during the late 19th century that made ending the slave trade exceptionally difficult. It is the most beautifully filmed and directed documentary that I’ve ever seen on this subject.”

In addition to Ebony, CuriosityStream is also featuring other titles to commemorate Black History Month:

Butterfly Effect: Martin Luther King, Jr. explores the big story of history through the small events that changed the face of the world — in this episode, the civil rights movement.

Underwater Wonders takes viewers into the shallow waters off Buck Island in the USVI, where archaelogists are exploring the remnants of two shipwrecked vessels from the transatlantic slave trade.

Curious Minds: American History examines the fascinating and impactful relationship between President Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.

These are just some of the more than 1,500 titles — many in stunning HD and 4K ultra HD — available to watch now by starting a free, 30-day trial of the world’s first ad-free streaming service for documentaries.
