Atlantis is nothing! Have you heard about the mythical island of Hy-Brazil? Island that could have originated the name of our country, Brazil, should appear only once every seven years.

Namesake island!

No doubt you have heard a lot about Atlantis, the lost city in the middle of the ocean that separates the Americas from Europe and Africa. The legend was so famous in antiquity that until today we talk of the place. However, what many people do not know is the legend of the lost second island in the Atlantic. That would be the Isle of Hy-Brazil, found by some browsers west of Ireland. The stories of these explorers are so vivid and, at one point, consistent, most maps made in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries positioned the place practically in the same region.

Many people believe the myth of Atlantis had deep relations with the possible existence of Hy-Brazil. The descriptions of both legends speak of an advanced society full of riches and lost in the middle of the ocean. Unlike Atlantis, which was sunk in the sea forever, Hy-Brazil is a place that appears to the human eye once every seven years.

The name of Brazil is related to Hy-Brazil?

There is a possibility that to be true. However, as we know, Caesalpinia echinata (Pau-Brasil, in portuguese) is the most likely source of the name of our country, but the origin of the name of that tree can be linked to the legends of Hy-Brazil. Otherwise, as the island was a place full of riches, it is still possible that the country has in fact received this name on account of its natural wealth also in analogy.

Another more speculative theory talks about the elements of our flag relating to the format of the Isle of Hy-Brazil. The mythological site would be a training ground in the shape of a perfect circle with a semicircular canal by cutting in half. Coincidence or not, the central circle of the Brazilian flag has exactly this drawing.

The globe of blue sky with the stars representing the units of the federation is cut by a figure in the same style channel Hy-Brazil, where we find our motto. However, the official meaning for this representation is simply the equator that cut north of the former territory of Pará, Brazil.

The emergence of the legend

The mysterious island that appears every seven years began to be placed on maps from 1325, long before the Portuguese arrived to this part of America. The Genoese cartographer Angelino Dalorto marked the island to the west of Ireland. After that, many cartographers followed the example of the Genoese and did the same.

As the location marked on maps, the island began to be sought in order to verify its existence and set its correct location. However, the task never been easy. Even so, some browsers claim to have succeeded in putting his feet on the mythological site and brought gold, silver and even an elder from Hy-Brazil.

The most famous story about a trip to the site was that of Captain John Nisbet Irish. He said, his ship was sailing near the Irish coast, and suddenly, a mist formed. As she disappeared, the crew realized that the boat was already very close to the rocks. They docked and then, four crew members were visiting the island.

A day after the match, the visitors returned to the ship with gold and silver and also brought the old man mentioned above. Once the ship returned to the Irish coast, the other was sent to Hy-Brazil, which also managed to find the place. Besides these, dozens of stories have been told about the place that never was proven.

The exact location of the island could never be proven

Furthermore, studies in the area where it should be the island of Hy-Brazil show that might have already existed land at that location, taking into account features such as the presence of some shells and the relief of the seabed there and even in Northern Ireland.

Today, even with the satellite monitoring of the entire globe, the island of Hy-Brazil was never sighted. If the legend was really true, this could be explained by the short appearance of the place, which may have dodged visits satellites over Ireland.

But what do you think? This mysterious island really exists or existed in previous centuries? Would Teixeira Mendes, the creator of the current format of our flag, was inspired by the design of the mysterious island?
