Did you know that even though Mercury is incredibly hot, there is ice there? The ice is buried deep beneath the planet’s caverns where sunlight can’t get to it. It’s been leftover from ice comets that have collided with the planet over the years. Most ice is evaporated instantly but traces of it land in spots where the sun doesn’t reach it. Over millions of years, Mercury has accumulated billions of tons of ice. If a planet has an area that sunlight never reaches, it’s called a Cold Trap. All of Mercury’s ice is hiding in Cold Traps.
