Presence is a buzzword that has been in the media, and particularly in the personal development sector, quite a bit over the past few years. By staying in the present, in the magical Now moment, you access a deeper, timeless part of yourself. You move from unconsciousness into consciousness.

That’s all fine and good, but we have real-life functions to perform here on Earth. We have bosses to please. We have kids we have to raise and feed. We have elderly parents we have to take care of. We have to wash the dishes, file our taxes, pay the bills, and perform all the other little chores that are part of life. It’s so easy to get caught up in the day-to-day that we forget to consistently move back into the Now.

Bestselling author Eckhart Tolle conducted a 10-part podcast with Oprah about teachings from his book A New Earth. As I listened to the podcast, I took down a set of notes on various ways we lose ourselves in the moment — and at the same time, the moment can be a reminder to return to presence.

Let’s have a look at seven of those moments, and what you can do in each.

You label yourself and it becomes an identity
