The unfortunate truth is many of us deal with critics, naysayers, and negative people—whether it’s our friends, family, or coworkers—who attack our goals and dreams, criticize us, and discourage us in countless ways.

If you handle it the wrong way, you may become negative, vengeful, and spiteful, which hurts your own success and future. But if you can escape the trap, you can start living life on your own terms and reach your highest potential and succeed.

It took me years to figure out how to overcome them and live a happier and more successful life. But while I had to learn these lessons the hard way, I want to save you time and frustration. Here are six simple strategies I’ve used to escape their negativity, which can help you can reach your highest potential and thrive:

1. Avoid getting baited into arguments

Your top priority when dealing with negative people is simple: Protect your mental and emotional health. And the easiest way to do that is to avoid getting baited—yes, baited—into arguments.
