Have you ever been triggered by something another person said or did, and your emotions just ran wild? Afterward, perhaps you thought, “Was that really me?” or maybe, “Wow, what caused me to fly off the handle like that?”

If you do not conquer self, you will be conquered by self. — Napoleon Hill

The past couple of weeks, I’ve been listening to a fantastic 10-part podcast/webinar featuring bestselling author Eckhart Tolle, who is interviewed by Oprah on the teachings in his book A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose. Tolle talks about moving into the present moment and allowing consciousness to dissolve the ego that causes us to lose self-control.

When ego-driven conflict shows up, Tolle advises breaking down the conflict into three levels.

1 — The event(s) themselves that triggered you

2 — Your emotional reaction to the event(s); what you felt, what you said to yourself

3 — Your observation of the other two levels

Let’s have a look at these three levels in action to illustrate how you can get to a place of dealing with conflict…
