You're heading to the office in the midst of heavy traffic. Your coworker constantly interrupts you. Your spouse hasn't cleaned up again. The inflation is too high.

We all find an alarming number of things to complain about. Complaining can be addictive, like drugs, alcohol, or working ourselves into the ground.

If you complain regularly, let me tell you, it's not even your fault. Our brains are negatively biased. We tend to focus on things going wrong rather than attending to everything that works in our favor.

A common effect of this bias is complaining, which everyone is familiar with. Fortunately, it’s easy to quit if you’ve set the right ground rules for yourself.

The most important distinction

Thinking merely positive is a rather foolish way to look at life. Stoic philosopher Seneca boiled it down:

“The person who has anticipated the coming of troubles takes away their power when they arrive.”
