Sometimes You Have to Do the Opposite of What Everyone Else Tells You

Standard advice can only take you so far.

Optimism doesn’t work for everyone.

That’s the first thing I learned after I stopped listening to everyone else, and started listening to my own intuition.

Some of us spent a decade following other people’s advice. We read interviews. We poured over books and magazines. It got us nowhere. We merely wound up broke and alone, and a little resentful at how everything seemed to work out for everyone else.

If all that great advice hasn’t gotten you anywhere yet, it’s time to make your own rules for the life you’re in. Reject everything you thought you were supposed to do or want. Start from scratch.

Here are some rules I live by. They don’t come from books. They don’t come from moments of triumph.

They come from good advice I turned upside down.

You have to take what’s offered.

Life has a way of crushing your first goals. And your second ones. And your third. Eventually, you’re left with a handful of choices you never thought you’d have to consider before.

That’s when most people completely give up.
