We all want to fit in.

…And that’s not a bad thing.

At heart, we want to fit in and be part of a community, and we want the people around us — friends, family, co-workers — to think of us as likable people. For many of us, that means changing our behavior to suit other people’s expectations.

However, it can become a bad thing if taken too far. Often, we might even feel like we’re losing our minds…just a little bit. For example, our social media feeds are filled with people who we think we should be — but aren’t. We feel unworthy compared to others and that makes us do crazy things, like pretend to be who we’re not.

Curious enough, nowadays we’re spending more time together than ever before and, yet, we feel more isolated than ever. We see ourselves as the loneliest generation in history but we live on social media where everyone is happy and beautiful. Ultimately, trying to make ourselves likable can have the opposite effect. When we try too hard to fit in, we can come off as inauthentic, or worse.

Truth is, the only way to get people to like you is if you maintain your integrity and stay true to yourself.
