Knowing is not the same as understanding.

Knowing is staying on the surface, understanding is going beneath the surface.

Knowing is having a ton of information. Understanding is connecting information.

Knowing is collecting facts. Understanding is being thrown a new, more revealing light on all the facts you know.

In a world of unlimited information and fast feeds, we rarely stop to process what we learn. We kill our minds by junk learning, thinking that we’re getting smarter when the exact opposite is happening.

The impact? Information doesn’t stick. We fumble clumsily for our notes. We borrow ideas and make none of our own. And of the universe of facts we absorb in a day, less than 1% is actually useful.

“Any fool can know. The point is to understand.” — Albert Einstein

To counter this epidemic, we need to know less and understand more. This means slowing down and taking a more active role in chewing knowledge. Here’s how.
