Keeping fit in other countries, is it affordable?

There are some stark similarities between health and wealth. They’re both ideals that most of us strive for, but they also both take hours of dedication, hard work and a bit of craziness to maintain. It also just so happens that they’re practically co-dependent these days.

Ironically, the simple diets and workout routines that we take on to feel and look better, need both time and money to maintain. Are you a health nut? Are you looking to move abroad? Have you ever wondered what keeping fit in your new country would cost? We thought we’d break it down for you. Here are some basic costs of some of the most popular gyms and fitness options in 3 of South African professionals’ most sought-after immigration destinations.

Australia

Australia is similar to SA. It’s a sunny, sport-loving country with 100s of beaches that offer space to show off our 6-packs. And while Melbourne might be one of the most expensive cities to live in the world, keeping fit there doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.

For a membership at the local CrossFit gym, you’re looking at between R971,23 and R1070 per month. Virgin Active gives you more flexibility (being open early til late every day), but costs slightly more — with an average monthly cost of between R1190 and R1550.

Dubai

It’s no secret. Dubai is expensive. Yes, their tax-free salaries give you more to work with, but keeping fit in the middle of the desert might cost more than you’d expect. A monthly CrossFit membership will get you sweating at R2709 to R3251.

However, there is a cheaper option. It’s called ClassPort, and it gives you temporary access to fitness clubs, gyms and classes around the city. A premium, monthly membership with ClassPort weighs in at about R1650.

The United Kingdom

It’s survival of the fittest in this bustling metropolis, but keeping up with the apex health nuts could set you back around double the cost of an average South African gym. CrossFit classes in the cloudy city come in at about R256 per lesson, or you could sign up for an unlimited CrossFit membership for R2733. Blimey!

Still looking to move overseas? Great. Make sure you work with a financial partner that understands the ins and outs of immigration. Currencies Direct is the only non-bank in South Africa qualified to move your money and investments around the world. We also happen to offer these services at a lower rate than anyone else in the country.
