Proving its mettle in student leadership and organization management, UP Circuit brings home the gold in the 2020 Shell Young Leaders Program — an 8-month leadership training competition — held from October 2019 to June this year, besting fifteen other organizations among seven different universities in Metro Manila.

Represented by its 2019–2020 Executive Board with Andrei Calabano at the helm as President, UP Circuit presented its plans and strategies on the implementation of its various initiatives in mid-year and final presentations — all strengthened through and supplemented by knowledge and skills provided by leadership sessions facilitated by Shell.

Throughout the run of the contest, UP Circuit rose above its competition by excelling in sharing key learnings, being able to showcase growth and awareness when faced with challenges.

According to Karlo Alaan, UP Circuit’s Executive Vice President for ‘19-’20, joining the competition was imperative mainly because of the cash prize, with finance, members’ welfare, transparency, and headship transitions among the top reasons.

The Shell Young Leaders Program is designed to instill and develop leadership and organizational skills among its participants, all with the goal of igniting the spirit of student leaders through Capability and Mentorship Sessions throughout the 8-month run of the competition.

When it came to the Executive Board’s preparations, Calabano stated that the key to winning was to just stick to the goals. “We focused on executing our plans and achieving our goals for UP Circuit,” Calabano said. “That’s how you win a leadership competition.”

“We really were in cloud nine that time, and it took time for it to sink in,” ‘19-’20 Internal Affairs Vice President Stephen Destura said in reference to their win. “We were just so happy that we were able to represent the org[anization] well in the competition.”

The win boosted the organization’s spirit, the team claims. “The best part of winning was representing and showing to other organizations that UP Circuit is one of the best organizations out there,” Destura emphasized.
