Teens spent more and swiped more often on Monday, November 19 than they did a week later on Cyber Monday, for the second year in a row.

Current card users are all Gen-Z, ranging in age from 13 to 23, which makes their swipe behavior an excellent barometer for their generations spending. In 2017 we found that teens spent less on Cyber Monday than they had on the same day of the prior week. In 2018 we saw more of the same. Current users swiped 7.0% less often, and spent 6.7% less on Cyber Monday than the Monday prior.

Gen-Z spent 2.5x more on Black Friday than they did on Cyber Monday

Gen-Z spent 2.5x more on Black Friday than they did on Cyber Monday.

Once again, teens saw Black Friday as an event and headed out to the mall. Current card holders spend two-and-a-half times more on Black Friday than on Cyber Monday. Some of the drop in spending can be attributed to Monday being a school day, and teens had less money in their accounts after spending so much on Friday. Just as important a factor, from our perspective, is that teens always shop online. They don’t need a special day to head online to find the lowest price for something they want. They always do that.
