CURSOR Connects June 2023 Issue — Main Article

UP CURSOR is back with its first face-to-face acquaintance party after a 3-year hiatus.

This year’s akwe was held at Gyud Food on May 2, 5:30–9:30 PM. The 4-hour event served as a way for applicants, members, and alumni alike to socialize through events, games, and dinner.

The Application Affairs heads, Myka Dineros and Mary Jane “MJ” Tang, gave the opening remarks for the event, welcoming the applicants into their future organization.

To showcase CURSOR’s talents outside academics, some members reprised their performances earlier in the semester. The first of these performances was from Indakan, Eng’g Week’s annual dance competition. The dance troupe of UP CURSOR performed a more modest version of their original performance, featuring a medley of Ciara’s discography including “Lose Control”, “Promise”, “Set”, and more.

As the akwe-goers ate dinner, hosts Paolo De los Santos and Nina Sapitula took over the microphone, performing a duet of their original song “Kaibigan”. The song was written and produced alongside Christian Quinzon, Angelo Ogerio, and Myka Dineros during Eng’g Week 2023’s Song Writeng’g, besting all other songs and earning first place.

The applicants were given bingo cards to be filled out; each tile was to be signed by a member that fit the tile’s description. Applicants ran around the event premises, asking members if they fit certain criteria including: if they hated dogs, if they had laude standing, if they were part of the notorious CURSOR Pokédex, and many more.

After dinner, the executive committee introduced the different committees of UP CURSOR and their functions within the organization: France Calma for Membership, Paolo De los Santos for Externals, Lei Ramirez for Records, Rain Castañeda for Activities, Pamjei Dela Rosa for Academics, Chrissy Quinzon for Finance, and Zai Dela Calzada for Information and Public Relations.

The last performance of the night was from Jammeng’g 2023, Eng’g Week’s annual battle of the bands competition. Vocalist Althea Manansala was accompanied by Aj Ogerio, Gabriel Calubayan, and Zach Romualdez on guitar, MJ Tang on piano, and Yuri Negrido on percussion. The six-piece performed renditions of “Every Summertime” by Niki and KZ Tandingan’s version of Up Dharma Down’s “Tadhana”.

To wrap up the entire event, everyone gathered together to hold UP CURSOR’s signature cheer. The applicants gathered on the floor, while members and alumni circled around them with arms outstretched. One person initiated the cheer, and everyone responded in prompt:

CURSOR, sexy!

CURSOR, sexy!

CURSOR, sexy!

Everyone raised their arms and started cheering. And with that, the applicants had their first taste of what it meant to be sexy — CURSOR sexy.
