Finally, after a long five-year wait filled with anticipation and hopes, Computer Science Week soared to new heights in 2024, marking its triumphant return with the mesmerizing theme of “Fantasia.” The event was a captivating journey into a world of fantasy and joy, offering a multitude of activities that engaged and enchanted members of the department from start to finish. Amidst the array of events, none captured the imagination quite like the highly anticipated Pop Icon Awards.

The Pop Icon Awards of 2024 stood as a beacon of recognition within the Computer Science community. This aims to honor individuals and groups whose contributions and personalities had left a notable mark. With categories ranging from the charming “Male Crush ng Bayan” to the prestigious “Best Programmer,” and from the random “Class Clown Award” to the curious “Most Mysterious Award,” the stage was set for an evening of celebration and togetherness. Professors too had their moment under the spotlight, competing fiercely for titles such as “Best Prof” and “Most Relatable Prof,” just to add a touch of academic flair to the festivities.

Months of preparation culminated in the opening of nominations through Google Form which allowed people to cast their votes from May 6th to May 10th. This inclusive approach ensured that the awards truly reflected the sentiments and admiration of the community which set the stage for an evening of suspense and celebration.

As anticipation reached its peak, whispers and speculations circulated throughout the halls of DCS. The Sexies were renowned not only for their academic prowess but also for their charm and vibrant personalities. It was no surprise, therefore, that when the nominations closed and the results were tallied, UP CURSOR emerged as a dominant force as they claimed victory in multiple categories.

Among the standout winners was CURSOR member Stephen Encarnacion, whose charisma and appeal earned him the aspired “Male Crush ng Bayan” award. Known for his amiable nature and infectious smile, Stephen had captured the hearts of many within the community which made him a natural choice for this prestigious accolade.

Drei Ragasa, another notable figure within UP CURSOR, achieved a remarkable feat by clinching not one but two awards: “Most Approachable” and “Most OA”. Drei’s ability to effortlessly connect with students from different batches and his tendency to add a touch of drama and emotion to every situation made him a favorite among both students and faculty alike.

Kier Patawaran, with his smarts and undeniable sense of humor, earned his way to victory in the “Class Clown” and “Life of the Party” categories. Kier’s comedic timing and ability to lighten the mood in any situation made him a beloved figure within UP CURSOR, embodying the spirit of fun that defined the organization.

The success of these individuals underscored UP CURSOR’s reputation as a hub of talent and camaraderie within the Computer Science community. Beyond individual achievements, their victories highlighted the collective spirit and sense of belonging fostered within the organization — a demonstration to the supportive and inclusive environment cultivated by UP CURSOR.

As the evening unfolded, each award presented was met with applause and admiration, a testament to the bonds and camaraderie shared among peers. The Pop Icon Awards not only celebrated individual achievements but also served as a platform to honor the diverse talents and contributions that enriched the Computer Science department.

As the echoes of applause faded into the night, one thing remained clear — UP CURSOR had not just won awards, they had captured hearts, forged lasting friendships, and set a standard of excellence that would continue to shine brightly for years to come.
