Green Investment: The Melbourne Urban Forest Strategy Project

With increase awareness of negative human effects on the environment, innovative strategies, models, products, and services have come to sprout to counter this balance. Many businesses have even adopted green marketing to push their products to the consumer even when they don’t deserve the merit.

Consumers however, have taken a liking to these green models and many pay higher costs for them. Green products, although just seen as a trend for some can benefit us in many ways (i.e. the environment), but can we take these green models further?

The city of Melbourne in Australia has come up with a unique and green way to invest in local greenery. Melbourne citizens have the opportunity to adopt a tree in their local neighborhoods, fostering a sense of pride in their local environment.

Melbourne’s Urban Forest Strategy project comprises of 70,000 trees ready for adoption. As a tree adoptee, you can name, tag, and track your tree’s growth, carbon offset, and its local contributions. You can even share your tree’s metrics on social media.

The Urban Forest Strategy project allows citizens to email the “tree” to report any concerns they may have regarding the tree or to simply send them “love letters.”

Melbourne’s project has a lot of potential to increase green investments in urban areas. I can definitely see projects like this shaping our culture and how we interact with the environment. Adopting urban trees might just inspire the next big social trend.
