Chris presenting on Cyber Discovery

Year one of the Cyber Discovery programme uncovered thousands of talented young adults to help secure our future technology. Now, as we begin year two, we are hitting the road to talk to students across the UK about the security profession. We are hugely passionate about the work we do and want to share why cyber security work is so fun, rewarding and important.

Over the past year, we have made it to a huge number of schools, but we wanted to share our latest experiences meeting potential cyber security leaders. If you think your school might benefit from a visit, reach out to us using the details at the bottom of this blog.

Where we went:

On Wednesday the 10th of October we sent Chris, one of our security researchers, to North Lindsey College in Lincolnshire and Franklin College in Grimsby to give a talk on the latest cyber security trends. Chris shared insights into the industry, his role and how he got started. He also gave a live demonstration of a security challenge before helping the students play CyberStart Go, to see if they could be one of the next generation of security defenders.

Chris thoroughly enjoyed his visit and said

“It was a privilege to present to the next generation of security professionals and technology enthusiasts, and very rewarding to see their faces light up when they beat their first challenge!”

We remember solving our first security problems, writing our first buffer overflows and reversing our first malware. It is always exciting to see such talented young adults set out on the same journey.

On Thursday the 18th of October, Jake Barwell and Anthony Chambers, development leaders working on building secure applications, developing code (and helping to make CyberStart as fun as it is!) visited All Saints RC Comprehensive School in Mansfield. Jake and Anthony talked about how important security is to developing modern applications and the latest trends in the industry.

Jake said about the visit:

“All the students seemed really enthusiastic and clearly remembered the first year, and all of them made it Game and Essentials stages. I really loved working through CyberStart Go with them, I really felt some of them learned something and had fun at the same time.”

What the students thought:

“The session was enjoyable and was a good experience as it gives an inside look into what professionals do, it also gave detailed information on how they do what they do and also informed you of how to prevent it happening to you”- Jordan

“I found the session interesting and engaging especially the demo sections that showed us how hacking is actually done. Chris used a mixture of practical and vocal resources which gave the lesson diversity and made it fun to be involved in. Even though I’m not looking for a career in cyber security, learning about all the options and different aspects of cyber security was still exciting and educational.”- Charlie
