What’s What: Arweave
Most of your NFTs are stored in centralized storage — including cloud storage services provided by corporations. Developers code NFT’ images in the storage to display them on web apps. During this process, databases of these NFT images are under the control of all centralized systems; if a centralised cloud server is hacked or URI is changed as developers change codes linked to NFT, your NFTs would show nothing or completely disappear.
Case 1: File Data Tampering Caused by Hacked Centralised Cloud Server
Centralised servers tend to be more vulnerable to hacking risks as a single central unit coordinates all the other one or more client nodes in the system. It could be an old-time story though you may have heard about the Dropbox hacking incident in 2012. When hackers attack centralised servers, files on the servers can be changed or removed. If the files are stored in a decentralised cloud system, the file data is distributed and synchronised in multiple independent servers at different locations, which enable the system to reduce hacking risks.
Case 2: URI Change Led by Code Modification
NFT-associated codes can be changed and amended any time when developers change/update URI codes. To raise awareness about this issue, Racoon Secret Society turned all their raccoon NFT collections into piles of bones. To mitigate these kinds of vulnerability risks related to a centralised cloud system, Cyber Galz deployed the distributed IPFS Arweave. All files and metadata of Cyber Galz NFTs — including codes, NFT properties and images — are uploaded on Arweave’ permanent data storage, thereby Galz NFTs will never be at risk of disappearing and the holders will never face a 404 error message.
