We are thrilled to announce the latest addition to the Cybersecurity for Democracy team — Yaël Eisenstat, a seasoned expert and thought leader in technology, policy, and democracy. As our Senior Policy Fellow, Yaël will play a pivotal role in advancing our mission to safeguard democratic processes in the digital age. She will focus on the below three core program areas and also help us fundraise to grow this work:

1. Democratic Discourse on Major Social Media Platforms:

Yaël will initiate a comprehensive mapping of threats to democratic discourse on major social media platforms, including TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook. This work will translate research findings into concrete policy recommendations for platforms, AI developers, and regulators, and propose actionable options to disrupt potential threats to democratic processes.

2. AI-Powered Political Messaging:

In an era where AI-powered algorithms and generative AI tools shape the landscape of political messaging and discourse online, the practical implications of these technological advancements must be more clearly understood. Yaël’s focus will be on exploring how hyper-personalization can potentially impact democracy and developing recommendations for proactive measures platforms and lawmakers can take to establish essential guardrails for new technologies.

3. Open Information Sharing Practices:

Recognizing the importance of transparency and collaboration, Yaël will kickstart our effort to develop best practices for open information sharing practices about online threats between a wide range of stakeholders. The goal of this effort is to develop mechanisms to keep stakeholders informed about potential threats while actively avoiding the appearance or reality of interference or conflicts of interest.

We’re excited to have Yaël with us as we begin work during this pivotal year. As we welcome her to our team, Cybersecurity for Democracy reaffirms its commitment to staying at the forefront of efforts to protect democratic processes. Yaël’s expertise in complex online threats will help us respond to the evolving dynamics of the digital landscape. We look forward to the impactful contributions Yaël will make in advancing our mission, and we invite all stakeholders to join us in this critical journey towards a more secure and resilient democracy.
