Network blind spots can be internal or external.

Cybersecurity remains a high-growth industry, in part because of bewilderment over general information-security concepts. According to the Pew Research Center, some 73% of Americans are unsure about the basic definition of a botnet. Granted, that could be construed as a more technical matter. Yet 43% were also puzzled about whether an email is encrypted by default. A key issue uncovered by the broad-based study is not outright ignorance, but rather confusion about underlying issues. Corporate technology officers may sigh deeply over the fact that among the 13 questions asked by Pew researchers, only 1% of the respondents answered all questions correctly. For venture investors, the findings emphasize the point that the most effective information-security firms address employee inexperience.

Our Vantage Point: Cybersecurity startups are well-served by the user landscape. Their corporate clients are discovering that lack of certainty over basic building blocks advocates for comprehensive network monitoring.
