Back in February we attended together with Federico the ITASEC 2018, the Italian conference on Cyber Security (somehow reminiscing CyberUK).

The venue was the Aula Rogers at the University of Milan. It was gathering of both academics, industry and major public bodies. The conference ran on three days mixing a variety of keynote and panel sessions on a wide spectrum of cyber topics — from raising cyber awareness and cyber range, to post-quantum cryptographic and national cyber protection.

— Some chatting on the Italian national initiatives on cyber security (scroll down if interested in more `researchy` part)

Quite a number of national initiatives were presented and — finally I’d say — an Italian national strategy on cyber security. The key driver is so-called DCPM Gentiloni — a governmental regulation named by the former signing PM. National cyber capabilities have been restructured and streamlined to ensure timely response to cyber attack and improve cyber preparedness. Strong focus is now put on cross- University, Industry and Public Bodies to make an Italian Alliance for securing the Italian cyberspace. The stepping stone: a white book on the current Italian cyber security landscape, challenge, opportunity and actions (if you can manage Italian writing….here the link)

For universities, public bodies aim at national initiatives to create, sponsor and support national centres for cyber security research. Likewise the UK program of Academic Centre of Excellence for Cyber Security Research (ACE-CSR), part of which CyberSoton is.

While attending keynotes, panels, etc. we had also time to present our latest research and project results.

Blockchain tutorial. First, together with Federico, we did a tutorial on blockchain technology with specific focus on the Hyperledger Fabric framework. The tutorial was an excerpt of a 2-day training course we successfully run for industry (check here out). The audience was around 60–70 people and many sharp questions were raised.

How secure is secure in a blockchain? Thanks to the work of Stefano, we analysed latest permissioned blockchain technology specifically the Parity solution. Read this further in this blogpost

Here an open-access to the related paper.

Service Ledger at work in the SUNFISH project. The conference was a great occasion to showcase the contribution of the SUNFISH project and specifically of the Service Ledger, a blockchain as-a-service solution to underpin trust-less computation. First we present the SUNFISH solution for Federation-as-a-Service and the actual application of it a cross-cloud payroll application. Check this blogpost for further info.

Here a picture of Luca and me presenting the overall idea and then Federico showcasing the blockchain at work.
