Advancements Of AI In The Near Future

Technology is evolving faster than ever, many of which will soon be implemented to bring drastic changes to the modern society. In the recent years, one of the technologies had the focus of the majority of the world, and it is Artificial Intelligence (AI). There had been many advancements in AI in the past years, but it is still being improved, and the development can further change how some industries might work.

  1. Healthcare

Artificial intelligence will actually change the way patients are treated. AI can perform many tasks in less time and at less cost, and it simplifies the lives of patients, doctors, and hospital administrators. Take the MRI, X-ray machines and CT scanners for example, their functions are undisputed. Robot doctors will gradually occupy the surgical site by making operations cleaner and more accurate. Compared with dermatologists, AI has been able to detect skin cancer more accurately, so through AI, disease detection will become more accurate.

2. Quantum computing

A trend worth watching in 2020 will be the advancement of quantum computing and AI. Quantum computing is expected to revolutionize many aspects of computer science and enhance AI in the future. It is designed to greatly increase the speed and efficiency with which we generate, store, and analyze large amounts of data. This could have huge potential for big data, machine learning, and AI cognition. By dramatically increasing the speed of screening and understanding massive data sets, the work of AI and humans can benefit a lot. It may even trigger a new industrial revolution. Only time will give the answer.

3. Computer graphics

Another trends to watch in 2020 will be the advances in the use of AI in computer-generated graphics. This is especially true for the more realistic effects, such as creating high-fidelity environments, vehicles, and characters in movies and games. When creating a realistic copy of metals or alloys on screen, or the dull sheen of wood or grape skin, the process is often a very time-consuming process. For human artists, it also often requires a lot of experience and patience. Various researchers are already developing new methods to help AI do the heavy lifting. AI is being used to improve features such as ray tracing and rasterization to create a cheaper and faster way to render hyper-realistic graphics in computer games. Some researchers in Vienna, under the supervision of artists, are also working on ways to automate part or all of the process.

4. Federated learning

As early as 2017, Google introduced the concept of federated learning, which uses decentralized data to partially or fully train models. Consider training a benchmark model on a computer and then delivering the model to other users with more data sets, who can access data locally (on phone, laptop, tablet) and fine-tune or personalize the model. In the end, the model will be more efficient and accurate than how it was in the beginning. The advantage with this is that the clients can train the model without sharing any local user data with external participants. The technology is being improved, and its application and implementation is being explored to fit various scenarios.

5. Advanced biometric services

When AI is used with biometric authentication data, it can provide a real authentication solution, making it difficult for cyber-criminals to scam people. AI is enhancing biometric ID verification to improve security, by 2020, this innovative technology will be improved with more reliability and higher accuracy.

As AI technology becomes more developed and advanced, the processes in many industry’s work will have lasting changes, this includes the applications of blockchain. As technological tools, both can be used in combination with each other or with other technologies to achieve things that people only dreamed of in the past. People’s lives will be changed, not only with respect to entertainment, security and healthcare, but the very lifestyle itself will be completely different. Imagine an AI robot that can recommend cuisines or food types based on the diet or allergy data, the preferences of previous orders and body health conditions that are all registered under your identity, where the data can be kept on a secure blockchain-based database, be analysed through Big Data and used to construct options using models built with federated learning. You no longer have to decide on what to eat, and everything can become hassle free. A life that can only be seen in Sci-Fi films may become a reality.

Many parts of the world are making small steps in improving the technologies and exploring ways to effectively use the technologies, and CyberVein is no exception. CyberVein has a R&D center at Zhejiang University with researchers that are dedicated to the research of blockchain and AI technologies. They have made steady progress in the technology that is supporting CyberVein, and have also succeeded in using federated learning to achieve accurate keratitis diagnosis. The diagnosis of keratitis is a difficult task for the doctors, because the different causes (bacteria, virus, fungi) of keratitis can’t be clearly distinguished by the naked eye, which may result in the wrong treatment plan for the patient. Hospital and patients were also not ready to shared their personal health data with other institutions, resulting in many data silos. However, through federated learning, the researchers were able to use these data and achieved an accuracy of 80% for the diagnosis of the different types of keratitis, which was better than 96% of the doctors who participated in the experiment. This has really demonstrated the effect of AI in the field of healthcare, and there will be a lot more improvements that can be done in healthcare using the AI technology.

CyberVein also did some work with the law enforcement departments, in which a data exchange and analysis platform was built for the different law enforcement departments in different cities to use and cooperate together to solve crimes. The platform was needed due to a concern that law enforcement department in different cities would not share the relevant and useful data of a crime with each other, wanting to solve the crime by themselves to keep all the credit, which may be useful in getting a promotion. This has definitely not helped in the efficiency in their work, and can be considered quite unethical. However, the platform changed that, by having nodes and data entry point at the different cities where the data will be uploaded onto the blockchain database, the police forces can have access to the information and the analysis tools to help solving the crimes. An improvement to this solution would be the biometric authentication technology mentioned above, which can make parts of the crime solving work easier, and can also improve the work efficiency and cost reduction in detecting cybercrimes.

The advances in computer graphics may indirectly benefit CyberVein in the data sets collected from a seafood sales platform of a company in China’s Ningbo province. The platform connects fishermen and buyers in the sales of seafood, where the various data incurred from the process of fishing, such as fish species, quantities caught, time and region of fishing, can be collected and uploaded onto the blockchain. Buyers can use the blockchain to check the relevant data to authenticate the prices. The platform is making the exchange fair, transparent and trusted. The way that computer graphics may indirectly benefit CyberVein from this is that the image recognition technology used in collecting the fish data will be improved in order to provide better and more accurate data samples for AI in the improvement of computer graphics technology. The improved data samples are kept on CyberVein’s blockchain, which may be used for later projects using federated learning, in compliance to data privacy protection policies that are in place.

Overall, we are all making steady progress in the development and improvement of the technologies. Rome wasn’t built in a day, these small steps will eventually build up to a future that is powered by advanced technologies, and CyberVein will proudly be a part of the forces that made it happen.
