I’m thrilled to announce that Cycle Phones is live on Wefunder!
We started working on this idea exactly 8 months ago, in November 2020, with the goal of creating a phone that will never get slow.
As we continued researching this idea, we stumbled upon hundreds of articles decrying the environmental impacts of the disposable attitude we have towards consumer electronics.
Every year, billions of phones, tablets, and computers are thrown into the landfill, contributing to 41 million tons of E-waste around the world. If not disposed of properly, toxins from E-waste has severe impacts on soil and water.
Not only do these effects produce irreparable environmental damage on local ecosystems, there’s also a hidden human cost as well.
You probably don’t associate throwing away your old phone with causing still-birth in expecting mothers, but the majority of our garbage ends up in developing countries waiting to be processed by women and young children.
It’s estimated that there are 18 million children as young as 5 years of age, that are actively engaged with the waste processing industry. Other kids live and play near recycling plants where high concentrations of toxic chemicals such as lead and mercury may damage their brain development.
So what can we do about this?
We’ve decided to focus on the device that people around the world throw away the most: Smartphones.
After talking to a lot of people about their phone ownership habits, we’ve discovered that people upgrade their phone for 3 main reasons:
- It’s too slow.
- The battery no longer holds a charge.
- Physical damage (Oops!).
Batteries and physical components aren’t difficult to replace, and phone manufacturers know this. Even if you replace everything, your old phone is still going to get slow eventually.
That’s why we’ve decided to solely focus on the issue of speed (at least for now).
It sounds crazy, but our phones will never get slow.
We do this by running an Android emulator on a server, and streaming the video output of that to your phone (kind of like Google Stadia).
This means that as we upgrade our servers, your phone will actually get faster!
Using this technology, we’re aiming to create a phone that will last 10 years, instead of the average of 3, and dramatically reduce global E-waste.
