Ho Shuet Ying, Director of DSTA’s Digital Hub, has been distinguished on the list of Singapore 100 Women in Tech 2023, in recognition of her exceptional contributions to the tech world. This esteemed list honours women who have profoundly influenced and inspired the Singapore technology landscape.

..leadership is so much more than leading a team to deliver outcomes and deliverables. A leader brings together a diverse group of people, cares for them, and creates shared purpose and meaning in their work.

Shuet Ying — Director Digital Hub

At the helm of DSTA’s Digital Hub, Shuet Ying leads diverse teams across interconnected technological domains of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Modelling & Simulation, Development, Security & Operations (DevSecOps), and Design Innovation & User Experience (DI/UX). She steers the R&T transition and development roadmap for AI, and Modelling & Simulation, while synchronizing rapid tech rollouts through DevSecOps and Software Engineering. Additionally, she fosters efficient teamwork and user-centricity in solutions to our defence engineering challenges and enterprise-wide initiatives through her DI/UX squads.

“My work allows me to work with the latest digital technologies and leverage on that to deliver innovation solutions. I am energised from having the opportunity to work with a team of like-minded colleagues who are all technology enthusiasts. It gives me great pleasure to be able to come to work and learn something new every day” she said.

Shuet Ying’s journey with DSTA started in 2000 as a network engineer working on cybersecurity for IT and computer systems. Her scope later expanded to system- and software cybersecurity, and vulnerability assessments.

“In system- and software cybersecurity, we look at how systems and software are designed to identify cybersecurity weaknesses and recommend means to close the gaps. Vulnerability assessment is a process in which we use various techniques and tools to scan and analyse the software for possible misconfigurations, software vulnerabilities and security gaps,” she recounts.

Driven by her tenacity and love for challenges, Ho Shuet Ying took on diverse roles over the years. In 2008, she briefly managed defence collaboration. By 2010, she ventured back into cybersecurity, expanding the Cybersecurity Programme Centre’s purview beyond enterprise computer systems to encompass SAF operational systems. In this capacity, she crafted solutions to safeguard vital defence assets, such as communication systems and unmanned aerial vehicles, against cyber threats. In 2020, she became the Director of the Digital Strategy Office and, a year later, she simultaneously assumed the role of Director Digital Hub.

Beyond protecting our cyberspace, Shuet Ying strongly believes in guiding and nurturing the next generation of leaders.

She shares: “To me, leadership is so much more than leading a team to deliver outcomes and deliverables. A leader brings together a diverse group of people, cares for them, and creates shared purpose and meaning in their work. When staff tell me that they have grown and learnt from being in my team, that always makes my day!”

On what advice she’d give to women aspiring to thrive in the dynamic tech landscape, Shuet Ying shares: “The key is to have an open mind to embrace new opportunities, a commitment to continuous learning, and hard work and determination. Last but not least, having strong support systems both within the workplace and at home will empower women to effectively navigate their work responsibilities while boldly chasing their career aspirations.”
