This fall season we have much exciting news to share! Two highlights: the launch of a part-time track for our MA degree and a $20,000 Google Research Award to our department to support the launch a 2025–26 workshop on critical frameworks for AI and design research.

Here’s a snapshot of more goings-on this semester:

  • In Karrie Jacobs’ Contemporary Issues in Design class, students observed how New York City infrastructure is transforming with site visits to Red Hook with Selldorf Architects and Battery Park City with artist Mary Miss.
  • We welcomed writer Roxane Gay and SVA Products of Design chair Allan Chochinov as guest critics for students’ final presentations in Steven Heller’s Approaches to Design History class.
  • In partnership with Archtober, we hosted an Open Mic/Open House at the D-Crit studio featuring Metropolis magazine editor in chief Avinash Rajagopal (D-Crit Class of 2011), Untapped design journal editor in chief Tiffany Jow, and New York Review of Architecture associate publisher Nicolas Raap.
  • Eric Schwartau’s Thesis Workshop included visits from Cyberfeminism author Mindy Seu and The Atlantic design director Laura Scofield (Class of 2019).
  • Each semester we host several Studio Sessions that feature thinkers, writers, and designers redefining cultural discourse. Our next session is Tuesday, November 12 in the D-Crit studio, with writers Jennifer Krasinski, Ismail Muhammad, and Niela Orr in conversation with faculty member Jennifer Kabat. RSVP here!
  • We are currently searching for the D-Crit Classes of 2026 and 2027! If you are ready for an MA at the frontiers of design, join one of our upcoming info sessions and apply…or consider sharing this newsletter with someone you think could be a D-Crit MA candidate.

We hope to see you in the studio soon!
