We are proud to introduce Art Bites, our new video series about intriguing visual artists. Enjoy our first mini-doc about Carlos Gómez de Llarena, a very interesting hybrid of a man, whose training as an architect and tech wizard has led him to create new art forms for the 21st century.
His latest effort, Plant-in City, is a collaboration between architects, designers, and technologists to create beautiful 21st century terrariums that are nourished through technology. These living structures combine modular architecture, basic laws of physics, embedded technologies, and mobile computing. To put it plainly, you can water your lovely little indoor ecosystem remotely with your mobile phone. But Plant-In-City is much more than a practical way to take care of plants. It’s an intriguing and gorgeous art project that puts plants in touch with human technology, and us humans in intimate touch with plants.
As a media architect, Carlos J. Gomez de Llarena’s work is smack in the middle of the intersection between art and technology. It involves physical and digital experiences which shape social interaction and our perception of space. Carlos has a mixed background in architecture from the Universidad Central de Venezuela, and also in interaction design from the MPS Interactive Telecommunication Program at NYU. His work has been awarded a Golden Nica by Ars Electronica, an artist residency at Eyebeam, and a US Patent, among others.
Plant-in-City is currently showing at Mark Miller Gallery in the Lower East Side, New York City (Until December 16 only!).
