Richard Garet: In The Midnight Hour

Through the month of June, run, don’t walk, to Times Square, where every night, at precisely 11:57 p.m., art invades the square’s electric billboards for a necessary reminder that not everything in life is shopping, courtesy of artist Richard Garet.

Garet calls this installation Perceptual: Sonic Landscape / Midnight Blink. It is an abstract visualization of sounds captured in Times Square across a multi-day period. He “transposes the neighborhood’s aural life into chromatic, visual landscapes. Removing all audio, Garet will then leave behind the moving image signal to create an experience of sound through vision that changes and pulsates according to the properties of the sonic composite”.

In short, he turns sounds into images so you can see how the sounds of Times Square look. Here’s video:
