We all have, during our life span, experienced one or more of these emotions; but sometimes it can prove difficult to distinguish precisely what we are feeling at one given time. Most of us are aware that there is a difference, but for the purpose of clarity, let us look at each emotion individually.

An attraction is an emotion linked to having a physical attraction for a person. This could either be for physical appearance, intelligence, one’s outlook, interests or their opinions mirroring ours.

Admiration is when we admire or look up to someone like a schoolteacher, sister, brother or someone at work with respect or warm approval; we admire their qualities and would like to aspire to be like them.

Love is a feeling which is far more intense than liking a person. The feeling of love may be for various people; however the expression of love is different in different relationships. For example, the love you have for your mother is expressed very differently from what you may have for your sister, which is again different from the love expressed for your wife.

Attachment means emotionally attached to someone or an something. Attachment is a need for someone to fill a void in your life or in your self-esteem. We can also be attached to material objects like a car, mobile, clothing, shoes, handbag and so on.

Dependence is a feeling based on our present want being fulfilled by someone or something, as a result of which, we are able to live a life of ease.

We have covered the differences between attraction, admiration, love, attachment and dependency. However, one thing they all have in common is that each of these satisfy the basic need that every living entity has at the core of its being, that of a sense of belonging, a feel of comfort, a want to be cared for, a crave for someone to talk to who’s willing to listen to you.

But none of these emotions gives us this for a long period of time. It is because we do find happiness in these emotions but very often it comes with conditions, expectations and compromises. And when any condition falls short, it makes us feel deeply hurt, wounded, rejected, angry to name a few. Hence, we need happiness which is self-fulfilling, lasting and moreover never followed by unhappiness or dependence on anyone or anything.

Is there such happiness in this world which can last, which is free from dependency and which is derived from within?

Dada Bhagwan, a fully enlightened being, founder of Akram Science, has said — Absolutely! One can experience happiness which is permanent, which exists internally and which is not reliant on anyone or anything. It is natural, constant, always within you, regardless of what is happening all around you.

“Real happiness and peace are attained only if one comes into one’s true Self”.
