Consensus 2018
The Consensus 2018 event was held from 14–16 May at the Hilton Hotel in New York. It is considered to be the most prestigious annual blockchain event, with rapid growth each year both in the number of attendees and speakers. The event consists of discussions and talks on blockchain and cryptocurrencies from leading industry startups, financial institutions, technology leaders and academic groups. In 2017 the event had around 2,700 attendees. This year, the turnout exceeded all expectations with over 8,000 people in attendance. The organizers of the event, Coindesk.com, oversold on tickets, which demonstrates the increasing popularity of the blockchain space. Tickets were priced at approximately $2,000, with reports of over $17 million total revenue from ticket sales alone.

The Chairman of DAEX Benjamin Gu also attended Consensus 2018 and posted some pictures of the popularity.
Several analysts and experts expected the cryptocurrency markets to surge based on the trend from previous years, although the event showed little to no impact on the markets. This may have been due to no “huge” announcements being made in comparison to previous Consensus events.
Benjamin will release an article soon about his experience and thoughts of the Consensus 2018 event. An interesting point he mentioned to the DAEX team was that several attendees we’re involved in products within the same category that offered similar features. This was similar to the internet boom in the 90s where several companies we’re making PCs and cell phones with slightly different features, which made it difficult to thrive against the fierce competition. He believes an ecosystem will be a large part of how entities will survive in this upcoming shift.
