To celebrate the legalization of cannabis for recreational adult use on January 1, 2018, I had to venture out of SF, which didn’t issue recreational licenses until Jan 5.

But not Oakland!

Harborside Heath Center, co-founded by Steve DeAngelo in 2006, opened to the general adult public Jan 1, 2018 at 6 AM and still had a line out the door at 9 PM.

I waited patiently in the line down the sidewalk, overlooking a picturesque harbor and spacious parking lot on Oakland’s Embarcadero, to be one of the first customers to buy cannabis licensed for sale to any adult by the State of California, Alameda County and the City of Oakland.

Inside I found a spacious dispensary featuring lots of green balloons, cannabis and completely full of eager customers.

As I tend to test my boundaries, I naturally purchased their Day 1 special for an ounce of dried flower — the legal limit for a retail sale in California.

The Alien Rock Candy (Alien Genetics) would normally cost $260 per ounce, plus tax, but was on sale for $150 per ounce. With taxes the total was close to $200.

It’s rather incredible really. Depending on daily dose, this amount of dried flower could easily last me anywhere from several months to a year— an incredible amount of good quality cannabis for $200.
