My silence as a writer is eating my conscious up, so I wonder how “good” Republicans manage to live with themselves in this political climate.

Within the last two years, I’ve been finding it harder and harder to refrain from writing about politics. My conscious has been truly bothering me over the fact that I haven’t been speaking out against the things that are happening in the world, and particularly, in America. This leads me to wonder, if I’m suffering from guilt about my own inactivity, how on earth are Republicans managing to live with themselves?

Fear of Political Writing

I’ve been a freelance writer for a long time, both online and off, and I consider myself to be a writer with a conscious. Typically, I try to steer away from writing about politics. It’s not because I don’t have very distinctive views about what’s going on in the political arena, because I do. My number one reason is rather personal, and the topic of another Medium story, but I can truthfully share the second biggest reason that I’ve steered away from writing about politics. That reason is FEAR.

  • Fear of alienating readers, when I’m trying so hard to build a future readership for my books. *Fear of being seen as controversial or combative when I express myself emphatically (though that’s the same way I write about everything).
  • Fear of getting caught up in a cycle of only writing about the negative things I see going on around me — because there’s so much — that I stop seeing the good stuff, also worthy of writing about.
  • Fear of being recognized in the real world by some nut job, and being associated with what I write.

I don’t know about anyone else, but the great thing about having a conscious, is the fact that it will lead you in the right way, if you stop constantly trying to fight it. That was how I felt when I wrote a political article about Donald Trump. I had decided that it was time to stop fighting my own conscious and not be afraid to speak truth to power. My decision was short lived at the time, but now, several months later, I find myself right back in the same place.

I never could understand how Republicans in Washington sleep at night after doing Trump’s bidding all day.

Following Your Conscious

I previously wrote a political post on another website, because I couldn’t stand the hypocrisy of the situation any longer. I never could understand how Republicans in Washington sleep at night after doing Trump’s bidding all day. Today I decided to re-post that article here on Medium. Since the website in question has done some restructuring, I wasn’t sure if the original article still existed. I didn’t want to violate any Medium rules about posting stories, so to be on the safe side, I Googled the title. To my surprise, I discovered the article had a nice mention on two other websites, although the original site no longer contained the post. PoliticalForum.com and Politcalfray.com both quoted an entire excerpt of the article that I’ve re-posted here, but I wanted you to enjoy the entire post.

Republicans Applaud the Emperor’s New Clothes While Trump Prances Naked in Public

First of all, before any Trump supporters get their panties in a bunch, let me clarify what is meant in the title of this article. No, this is not a smear campaign or “fake news” claiming that Donald Trump was seen in public somewhere, prancing around naked. The “nakedness” I refer to is in a symbolic sense. If you know the children’s story of The Emperor’s New Clothes, you’ll get a better understanding of what I mean.

About the Emperor

If you’ve never heard the story of the Emperor’s New Clothes, let me give you a brief little summary, then I’ll show you how President Trump and the Republicans fit in. Basically, the story is about a ruler who not only endorses a fabricated lie, but goes out of his way to degrade anyone who doesn’t buy into it. This all had to do with how he wanted to be perceived by others. Although he was a ruler, he put himself and his own feelings in front of those that he was supposed to serve and rule over. Because of his me first, self-important attitude, he heavily clothed himself in a humungous lie.

The notable point about the Emperor in the story is the fact that rather than spend time on matters of state or other pressing issues, he was always occupied with how he looked. His chief concern was his own outward appearance and not what was best for the people he ruled over. Sound like anybody we know?

Because of his preoccupation with “self” the Emperor believed the hype he was told by two swindlers (we’ll just call them Sean and Rudy) who claimed to be able to help him and his ruler-ship. They sold him clothes that were supposed to be made of cloth that had “…a wonderful way of becoming invisible to anyone who was unfit for his office, or who was unusually stupid.” His response was: “If I wore them I would be able to discover which men in my empire are unfit for their posts. And I could tell the wise men from the fools. Yes, I certainly must get some of the stuff woven for me right away.”

Later when he was asked what he thought of the clothing, of course he knew there was nothing to see, but being the arrogant ruler that the Emperor was, he marveled at how magnificent the “invisible” new clothes were. None of the notable people in his empire wanted to be thought fools, so just like the Emperor, they all kept up the pretense, and so did many others in the kingdom (just like the Republicans and Trump supporters of today).

Donald Trump’s Apparel

When we assess the current situation with our current President, there’s no way to deny that Donald Trump walks around in public, draped in nothing but lies. Sad as it is, he doesn’t seem to possess not one honorable quality to cover himself with. Just like the Emperor in the story, President Trump has made a spectacle of himself with all the false statements and outright lies he has told. Those who wink and nod and act like they don’t see it are just as bad as the Emperor’s “subjects” were. They blindly supported him and showered him with their applause. They cheered the foolish man on and let him revel in his pride and arrogance. Some of the subjects probably talked themselves into believing that they really could see the “new clothes,” but for the most part, they were all just too cowardly to speak up.

In a similar way, Republicans have been doing the same thing with President Trump, but now enough is enough. Someone needs to finally speak up? Tell Donald Trump how embarrassing his dishonesty really is for us. Other nations are watching from all around the world. What must they really be thinking? In fact, what could the Republicans and entire Trump Administration be thinking? Why are so many of them continuing to *drink the Kool Aide? They’re behaving just like sheep being led to a slaughter.

Is it fear of retaliation from the Emperor? It seems like they’re driven by their desire for political upward mobility. Then again, maybe it’s just plain old shame and embarrassment.

Self-Deception

I wonder do they rush home when they leave the Oval Office and have a good laugh at Donald Trump’s expense?

The website: The Mind Unleashed wrote an article titled: Self-Deception, Our Media and the “Emperor’s New Clothes Effect.” In it, they discuss the issue of self-deception. But not all of President Trump’s lies are about deceiving himself, but are more about deceiving everyone else. One Washington Post article reported that “President Trump has made 3,001 false or misleading claims so far.” [as of the original writing of this article]. Can the Republicans and Donald Trump supporters really be that blind? Naïve? Gullible? Or dare I say “stupid” — or do they just enjoy egging him on?

His fancy Emperor’s robes don’t cover up the petty, insecure “me, me, me” attitude.

It’s easy to imagine the enablers who applaud this “Emperor’s” new clothes, secretly snickering at him behind his back. I wonder do they rush home when they leave the Oval Office and have a good laugh at Donald Trump’s expense? How do they manage to stifle their giggles (or disgust) as he so unashamedly prances around in the buff? Whether Republicans admit it or not, President Trump’s nakedness is on display (figuratively speaking of course) for all the world to see. All his private parts are no longer private and his secret shortcomings have been put on blast.

If there weren’t so many cowards among them, maybe someone could sit him down and do an intervention; and for God’s sake, tell the man to put some damn clothes on!

His once veiled racism is no longer hidden under the folds of his imaginary suit. His fancy Emperor’s robes don’t cover up the petty, insecure “me, me, me” attitude. You’re fully exposed Mr. President and anyone with half a brain can see you. Maybe that’s why the Republicans just don’t get it. They behave like they don’t have half a brain between them. There doesn’t appear to be even a handful of courageous women and men in their ranks. If there weren’t so many cowards among them, maybe someone could sit him down and do an intervention; and for God’s sake, tell the man to put some damn clothes on!

In the story of the Emperor’s New Clothes, it only took a small child to bring to light what should have been obvious to everyone from the start. The Emperor held a procession and pranced before the town and a child yelled out the truth about what he saw, or rather didn’t see. It was this small voice that got the townspeople to finally get the courage to speak up and start crying out: “But he hasn’t got anything on!” But even when the people did start acknowledging that the Emperor was naked, he was still just as haughty as ever. He and his ambitious noblemen continued to keep up the lie.

The story ends by saying: The Emperor shivered, for he suspected they were right. But he thought, “This procession has got to go on.” So he walked more proudly than ever, as his noblemen held high the train that wasn’t there at all.

Conclusion

As we continue watching our own naked “Emperor” during this difficult Administration, it causes one to wonder, how much longer will we allow this type of leader to set the tone for who we are? If the President of the United States of American can’t be trusted not to lie whenever he opens his mouth; he’s creating a new definition of truth. Pretty soon we’ll all be walking around naked.

Who Else is Guilty?

Babies in cages under any circumstances is wrong, period, point blank!

Ironically, I wrote the above post during the first part of Donald Trump’s term, but the content is still just as true and the situation has only worsened. What I couldn’t understand then, and even more so now, is why we as human beings allowing the things we see happening around us to continue? Babies in cages under any circumstances is wrong, period, point blank!

Right is right, hate is wrong, and there’s no pretty way to dress it up.

How do all those “good-hearted” Republicans who look away from babies in cages, justify their horrified reaction to the cruelty of animals? Talk about hypocrisy on the highest level. Shouldn’t human life have just as much value as the dogs and cats you all band together to protect? Right is right, hate is wrong, and there’s no pretty way to dress it up. I honestly and sincerely wonder how people who stay connected to racist behavior live with themselves — no shade intended whatsoever — I just truly don’t understand it.

Personally, I FEEL GUILTY when I write about superficial stuff and spend time talking about my own petty concerns.

I FEEL GUILTY when I shun and shirk the responsibility of using my God-given writing talent for a higher purpose.

I FEEL GUILTY for not being a bigger and better voice against social injustice.

That’s why I truly wonder how much guilt many Republicans must be feeling, and not just those who surround Donald Trump. I’m talking about the average Joe who still clings to the Republican party just because, or those who still follows Trump because they were fooled in the beginning and don’t know how to admit they were wrong. Have they all ceased to stand for anything, so that now they all fall for everything? I truly wonder.
