This flower has a long-standing significance to veterans throughout the world. You may see the small plastic “remembrance poppy” that people often give away on Memorial Day. This flower symbolizes the sacrifice of soldiers who have died in war.

I was already safely back in the States when the first casualty reports from our division came back. Blessedly my company did not suffer any direct casualties. I did, however, know some of those who lost their lives that horrible October day. For them and all the service members who have given their lives, I take a moment today to remember.

This poppy was from a field in Northern Italy near a vineyard named Il Poggio.

As you look at the flower, take a moment to remember those you know who gave their lives to war. If you don’t know anyone personally, count your blessings. Then remember them all.
