Fridays for Future

A Poem in support of Greta Thunberg (NaPoWriMo)

You are in the wind that blows and moans You are in the sea with its turbulence and foam

You are in the howling of the gale I hear your anguish in the rain and hail

I hear your voice in the fire as it spits and crackles And burns itself out leaving all unshackled

No word unspoken no stone left unturned You fight for earth’s rights your voice strong, as words serve

I see your strong heart and your nerves made of steel As people yell, and ridicule rally against, but you never do yield

I wish I had just an ounce of your courage In my bones, in my heart to stand tall, not malnourished

Making a stand for this earth against all the big money Those who turn one against the other for democracy’s sake — oh, how “funny”

Without mother earth living We are all doomed to die Welcome to the age of protest Pick up your placard, we all have to try!

I will bravely listen to the voice of a girl only 15 years old shy, introverted, and small who connects us all together, I am told

If she can stand up, all alone every Friday Then maybe we can join her and also be counted — and help form a highway

An earth full of people all joined hand in hand round the globe, whose goal is the same, and maybe, just maybe, we can all help change the “end game”

My second poem posted for NaPoWriMo Poetry Month of April.

This poem was written in support of Greta Thunberg who staged an action in August 2018 outside the Swedish parliament, holding a sign that read in Swedish “School strike for the climate.”

She coined the slogan FridaysForFuture, which gained worldwide attention and has garnered international support from students, teachers, parents and communities all around the world since that time.
