Debunking Mental Health Myths Left and Right
Apparently I’ve been in an argumentative mood lately.

Reviewing this week’s writing in preparation to send out my newsletter, I noticed how many of my posts go something like, “Why [insert any popular idea about mental health here] is false, and what’s actually true instead.”
I must confess the titles have been a little click-baity, because in truth I’m not trying to say that anything is really wrong. I’m just trying to advance the discourse beyond what may have been the best wisdom we had in the past, to what can actually change lives now.
I’m trying to move the conversation about mental health away from illness, and toward wellbeing.
I want us collectively to stop creating endless lists of symptoms that support an ever-burgeoning industry of self-help products and coaching, and start sharing the foundational principles that define our psychological experience.
That’s what I try to do every day.
I try to point people so thoroughly to their innate, infinite, and immutable sense of well-being that they never have to read another self improvement blog post or talk to another life coach again. They can if they want to — I sure do, because I think that stuff is fun — but no one should have to in order to know that they are already whole, perfect, and okay.
My goal each day is to write a post that will — for someone — be the post. That one post that triggers the insight that person needs to finally get out of their head and into their life. Here are a few that have done that for someone — maybe they’ll help you, too:
- Your Thinking Creates Your Feelings
- Balance Isn’t About Being Still
- The end of suffering is inevitable
- What’s stopping you from enjoying your life?
- Social Media Envy: What we’re really jealous of and what to do about it
I guess you could say I’m trying to put myself out of a job. Don’t worry — I’ll be fine. More than fine. I’ll finally get to pursue my other dream — of being a sheep farmer.

Until then, I’m not giving up on this conversation.
Do you want to have a conversation that just might be the last conversation you need to have about your mental health? Let me know.
I’d love to get one step closer to that sheep farm.
