Keep doing what you’re doing

You’re doing great.

This past week, I’ve been in orientation for my upcoming side hustle teaching writing at Oregon State University.

We spent many an hour listening to folks who have already done what we’re about to do give us advice on everything from what to wear to what to say to disruptive students to what time-management apps to use.

I felt inspired by many of their suggestions, like beginning with empathy and remembering to learn from students. There were some suggestions, however — like crafting a teacher persona and using PowerPoint to deliver lectures — that had me cringing with anxiety. Some things just felt so. Not. ME.

Fortunately, someone called this very thing out. She said, “Hey, if you feel panicked just thinking about any of this, don’t do it.”

So, that is what I wanted to share with you, in no uncertain terms.

You are your best judge. You’ve got a very wise, sensitive compass in your belly pointing you where to go.

If something’s working for you, don’t stop doing it — no matter who tells you otherwise (yes, even me!).

If it’s not working for you, or if even thinking about doing it makes you want to run for the hills, then don’t do it — no matter who thinks it’s a good idea.

If I could help my students, clients, loved ones — and myself — learn only one thing, it would be to trust your inner compass. It knows what’s up.
