A strange, lucky, lonely stopover in San Antonio, Texas
San Antonio, March 2020: Shut Down For COVID
By Amy Sterling Casil
Bruce has been writing about our cross-country move from south Orange County in California to Florida’s southwest Gulf coast. I drove my Jeep and Bruce drove his Honda Civic. We took turns having Gambit in the car.
Our second stop was El Paso and our third, San Antonio. I’d always heard about the famous Riverwalk and to my amazement, we found a room at Hotel Gibbs, right across from the Alamo. There were only a few people staying there and we got the Presidential Suite for only $100 a night due to the COVID pandemic. It was the early days of COVID shutdowns and few people knew what they were supposed to do.
I spent time talking with the hotel manager and the extremely nice staff. They were worried their hotel would go out of business and talked a lot about how people were getting unemployment, so it was difficult to find help.
As you’ll see when you read Bruce’s account, he drove a long way to get food for us for dinner because everything in downtown San Antonio was completely shut down, including the Riverwalk.
