“I’ve Never Been to a Sporting Event”

Have you ever learned something you didn’t know about a friend or relative that you just couldn’t believe? I had that experience when Amy and I took Amy’s daughter Meredith and her boyfriend Devin to the Tampa Bay Rays baseball game for Meredith’s birthday.

We live in southwest Florida now so our local team is the Tampa Bay Rays. Amy’s original team is the Los Angeles Dodgers and mine is the Philadelphia Phillies. Amy wore her Vin Scully shirt and I wore one of my Phillies shirts. In case you don’t know, Vin Scully was the Dodgers’ beloved TV and radio announcer for 67 years. Amy and I have no special attachment to the Tampa Bay Rays, but we both love a good baseball game so we were happy Meredith chose going to the game as one of her birthday presents.

We parked across the street from the stadium and were walking through the gate as we heard the strains of the Star Spangled Banner. We made it to our seats in the lower deck where we met Meredith and Devin. Amy and Meredith went to get food and beverages and Devin and I began to chat. I asked Devin which baseball team he followed and…
