Nanoplastics
Who Knew We’d All Become Plastic People?
Microplastics, nanoplastics, and you …
Your Water Bottle is Filled With Tiny Pieces of Plastic
By Bruce White
When you look into a bottle of water from the refrigerator, you see pure water. But what is revealed at a billion times magnification tells a different story. Using a new technology called stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) microscopy, researchers found, on average, 240,000 plastic particles in the three brands of bottled water tested. Of these particles, 90% were nanoplastics, or particles smaller than one millionth of a meter.
You may have heard about the controversy concerning microplastics in the environment, in our food and in us. Microplastics have been found everywhere, from the bottom of the ocean to clouds. It’s just beginning to be known what specific health effects they will have on humans and animals. A recent study showed that people with evidence of microplastic in their carotid arteries were twice as likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke.
Microplastics Vs. Nanoplastics
Microplastics are tiny, but they are thousands of times larger than the nanoplastics recently detected using the new SRS…
