Did you know: Some pet insurance providers offer pet travel insurance that acts just like regular travel insurance, but for your pets?

Traveling with your pet is a lot easier these days than it used to be. In fact, even if you want to take your fur baby abroad, most European Union countries allow it with very little fuss or complications.

However, just like people, pets are often afflicted by illness, accident or injury that may disrupt your travel plans, or even force you to cancel them completely.

If you’ve ever had to cancel a trip or cut a vacation short, you know both how disappointing and expensive it can be. It’s easy to get bogged down by cancellation fees, or, even worse, fine print that keeps you from getting a refund at all! Thankfully, travel insurance can be purchased in advance of the trip to help cover any costs endured or money lost due to illness, injury, or cancellation.

But what if your beloved pet falls ill the day before your scheduled vacation, or worse, three days into a seven-day trip? In most cases, travel insurance does not cover pets. However, some pet insurance companies have a pet travel insurance policy built into their plans.

This is obviously a huge relief to pet parents who can’t bare the thought of leaving their fur baby behind while they go on vacation. However, amidst the good news, there are certain things that must be considered before boarding with your pet on a flight to parts unknown…

  • Check whether your pet insurance policy covers vet fees abroad
  • Pet passports and associated costs can be a significant expense, but this can also be insured against
  • Be aware of any exclusions, such as countries that aren’t covered and time restrictions on trips
  • Choose a vet nearest to your destination in case of emergency
  • If your pet has a pre-existing or known condition, be sure that you know how to explain it in the country’s native language or take a translation of it with you
  • Make sure all of your pet’s vaccinations, worming and flea treatments are up to date
  • Most countries limit the number of pets you can travel with to 5, so you may not be able to take the whole brood with you without incurring extra fees

So, which pet insurance providers offer pet travel insurance?

Pet Plan and 24 Pet Watch are the only two pet insurance providers that offer coverage for boarding and kennel fees. They also offer trip cancellation coverage in addition to their pet insurance for dogs and pet insurance for cats policies.

If you already have a policy with Pet Plan or 24 Pet Watch, do not assume that your policy has travel coverage. Always contact your pet insurance provider first to see what plan you have and what it covers. You may need to update or upgrade your policy in order to be covered for pet travel expenses.

Planning a trip is hard enough without having to worry about your pet getting sick or injured. With the bonus of pet travel insurance, both you and your fur baby can rest easy knowing that you will be prepared for anything that comes your way.
