3rd January 2016 — My mother frantically wakes me up, all panicked. Our cat had been throwing up all morning, she needed to be rushed to the vet yet again.

Barely two years old. She has seen more suffering than most. We rescued her from our ‘chhat’ at barely 2 weeks old and no bigger than my palm, abandoned by her mother. A premature birth, not fit to survive and hence, left behind.

Our dog, Scruffy, was the one who found her and in his own way begged my mother to take her in, refusing to budge from the tiny kittens side until she was indoors. Treating her with the utmost care, nudging at her side while she hissed at him violently, scared beyond doubt.

Fast forward a few months, growing up with a dog took its toll on her when she mistook the street dogs to be as patient and cat-friendly as our Scruff. Needless to say she was horribly injured, to the point wherein the doctor almost had to amputate her leg. After months and months of treatment and care, she survived. A little handicapped in one leg but she made it. From that day on Scruffy was her guardian angel, chasing away any street dogs and cats who tried to get close to her.

This morning she was put through another horrible ordeal. The vet even went on to say ‘How much will you fight her destiny, how much have you saved her already!’ and it was in that moment that I felt truly grateful to God for leaving her on our ‘chhat’. For giving us the chance to save her and help her. There is no better feeling in the world than to help another. I am grateful for Scruffy who had the sense to take her under his wing and protect her. Grateful to my mom for giving us the values to care for another animal, to respect another being.

Moreover, I am thankful to God for giving Eva (our cat) the strength to endure such pain and come out all the more stronger. She is better now today, but a relapse of her condition will not be a good sign at all. We are hoping and praying for her speedy recovery. And Scruff as usual is by her side as she fights off the anesthesia and starts wobbling around the room!
