getting to where you already are

6 years ago I had a dream and immediately wrote it down after waking up:

I’m atop a cliff looking down at a mesmerizing canyon. The hues are impeccably warm and the air is dry to a crisp. It’s surreal. The sun that is making the entire experience possible is also setting at an inexplicably fast rate — darkness appears to be mere minutes away. Despite the rapidly approaching darkness, I find myself preoccupied looking through a tiny viewfinder of a camera trying to accomplish the impossible task of capturing the most grand and gorgeous parts of the canyon. Before I can even capture one photo, the sun sets and everything becomes pitch black. I can’t see anything and can’t remember who I was with.

It was tragic in every sense.

The magnificence and grandeur of the canyon was a fleeting scene that left just as surely as it came. And I was so preoccupied trying to meticulously capture parts of the whole that I ended up savoring none of its raw brilliance and beauty.

Looking back and more closely, the dream offers a cautionary tale. While the sun is out, you may find yourself running a fool’s errand going to great lengths — sometimes obsessively and perhaps out of FOMO — to curate the best bits of the canyon thinking you will somehow arrive at a better and more prestigious experience. All the while, it is the canyon itself and the fact that you’re in it with people who have become dear to you (and you, dear to them), that is the most worthy of awe and gratitude.
