Bow Thine Ear
Proverbs 5:14 (KJV)
I was almost in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly.
This is the culmination of refusing the wisdom instruction and understanding of his father. The warning goes that, should one depart from the words to this teaching, he may end up in all evil while still in the midst of the congregation.
This warning is too often unheeded, especially but not exclusively among the young. Hearing the Word of God so frequently, being so used to the preaching, and having learned the expectations of those who spend so much of their time in church or around the people of the church, yet being lost, they learn to sin in the midst of the congregation.
The unrepentant soul can sin in any setting. The heart that is defiled can adapt to its surroundings so that it survives well there. For a time.
This chapter ends with them being caught by the strange woman. Often that sinful soul finds attraction in another soul of similar nature and their folly is exposed.
The solution is to “bow thine ear” (vs 1). Don’t merely hear the Word of God and the instruction of the godly parent, surrender to it.
In this surrender is victory.
