John 10:6 (KJV)
This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them.

One should not miss the irony of the passage. Jesus had just said that strangers would not follow because they do not know the shepherd’s voice. “But they understood not….”

He explained himself more thoroughly and plainly, but the Pharisees, for the most part, never got it. (Excluding probably Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea.)

One of those things Christians must be so cautious of is allowing ourselves to grow frustrated that “strangers” do not recognize the voice of the Lord. There may be some who follow along with the flock. Some may try to get the benefits without the faith, but only those who know the shepherd, Jesus, recognize His voice and follow Him.

We can explain and should explain our faith’s position as clearly as possible. But we must not grow disillusioned, discouraged, or downtrodden when the stranger does not get it.

They can do no other; they’ve not heard the same voice we have.
