Proverbs 13:3 (KJV)
He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.

I want to couple this passage with James 3:1–2
My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation. For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

The preacher, in surrendering to his call from God, accepts the consequences of his call. The one who remains quiet is, generally speaking, the one who is the less judged. The Bible teaches us to be sparing with our words. But there are exceptions. Every Christian should freely witness the Word of God and especially the Gospel of Jesus Christ. There will be a price to pay for that. The world will not appreciate the witness and, as they did to Peter and John, insist that we cease on pain of punishment. Like Peter and John our answer must be, “We cannot but speak…”[1]

But what is true of the believer is doubly true of the preacher. His call to teach and preach the Word of God places him in full conflict. Furthermore this conflict is with those within and without the local church. He faces the wrath of the lost world, who hates Christ. He often also faces the criticism of Christians whose flesh is opposed to the meatier applications of the Bible.

Pray for your preacher and be a blessing to him.

[1]Acts 4:20 (KJV)
For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.
